quantized

Quantized typefaces restrict the width of every glyph to a relatively limited number of potential values (as opposed to allowing every glyph its own natural width). For example, some quantized typefaces are mostly monospaced but allow especially narrow or wide characters additional width settings. Some historical type systems like the Monotype machine or IBM’s Selectric typewriter also use quantized unit systems for glyph widths to simplify layout calculations and/or limit mechanical complexity.

The iA Writer fonts, made for the iA Writer app, are a modification of ​IBM Plex, originally designed by Bold Monday with Mike Abbink at IBM. The Mono fonts match glyph widths for all characters. Duo allows an additional glyph width for letters that are otherwise cramped. Quattro uses 4 glyph widths, approaching a standard proportional typeface.
