A special-purpose font that demonstrates the relationships between variable “width” axes for use with different writing directions. For example, horizontal layout is typical with Western characters (represented as hollow rectangles in this font), but vertical layout is often used with some Asian characters (represented as solid rectangles), and it’s possible to combine aspects of both in different ways. This can make the relationship between different glyphs’ width, height, and rotation complicated. Ken Lunde explains more in the article introducing the font.

A set of special-purpose variable fonts based on Adobe Blank and Adobe Blank 2, intended to render all Unicode characters / code points using variable glyphs. Adobe Blank VF renders all code points with empty space, and Adobe Black VF renders them with a variable rectangle. The “2” versions of the fonts are produced in a way that is more data-efficient, but may not be supported in all environments. These prototype fonts were built by Ken Lunde and his colleagues at Adobe for developers to test support for “variable font collections” that combine the technologies for both variable fonts and font collections. The fonts simulate the structure (styles, glyphs, character mapping, features, etc) of Source Han (Serif & Sans) and Noto CJK, but only contain a dozen or so functional glyphs, repeated thousands of times. Lunde’s introduction explains how variable font collections can greatly reduce file sizes for type systems with expansive character support, like Pan-CJK fonts for typesetting East Asian scripts.

​Handjet started as an exercise with design students to make a typeface for handset printers and their 32-pixel vertical matrix, but grew into a large multi-script design.

In 2019, Google sponsored and extension and open-source release of the typeface. Consultants for the project include Maria Doreuli (Cyrillic), Irene Vlachou (Greek), Borna Izadpanah (Arabic), Khajag Apelian (Armenian), and Meir Sadan (Hebrew).

The font is provided with a warning that “variable fonts are relatively new and Handjet sometimes challenges the limits. You might get unpredictable, yet beautiful and somewhat amusing, rendering errors in Adobe software. It works well in browsers as far as we know.”
