The iA Writer fonts, made for the iA Writer app, are a modification of ​IBM Plex, originally designed by Bold Monday with Mike Abbink at IBM. The Mono fonts match glyph widths for all characters. Duo allows an additional glyph width for letters that are otherwise cramped. Quattro uses 4 glyph widths, approaching a standard proportional typeface.

​Handjet started as an exercise with design students to make a typeface for handset printers and their 32-pixel vertical matrix, but grew into a large multi-script design.

In 2019, Google sponsored and extension and open-source release of the typeface. Consultants for the project include Maria Doreuli (Cyrillic), Irene Vlachou (Greek), Borna Izadpanah (Arabic), Khajag Apelian (Armenian), and Meir Sadan (Hebrew).

The font is provided with a warning that “variable fonts are relatively new and Handjet sometimes challenges the limits. You might get unpredictable, yet beautiful and somewhat amusing, rendering errors in Adobe software. It works well in browsers as far as we know.”

A modular type system comprised of several variable fonts with a mix of unusual variations. The demo website, developed by Florian Zia, allows users to control the variations via sliders or an audio sensor, and also download static instances of the fonts for personal use. ​Amstelvar is an exercise in variable weight, contrast, and proportions. Positive and negative forms can be manipulated as separate axes, as well as a large array of other variables. It is an experimental work in progress so can produce unusual results.
